#NOTDEFINEDBYGEOGRAPHY
Even six feet apart, you can still stay in the loop!
As part of the Taylor family, you care a lot about community. That’s probably one of the reasons why you chose to attend or work at Taylor, because of the intentional focus in creating a healthy, vibrant community. But in the days of COVID-19 and social distancing, we’re forced to take a deeper look at how we think about our community.
Like the Life Together Covenant says, our community isn’t limited by geography. Our connection to each other goes beyond eating meals in the DC, late-night talks in the residence halls, worshipping in chapel, and attending classes on campus. We’re united by the Holy Spirit, bound together in love, and we share in the educational, vocational, and spiritual mission that makes Taylor unique.
We don’t have easy answers. But there’s a place to continue the incarnational community that was started on campus. This Instagram feed is just a glimpse into how those connections can continue despite the distance between us. Together, let’s figure out what our community looks like when we are #notdefinedbygeography.

My name is Brandon Smith; I’m a junior from Aurora, Colorado. This is my second year as a Personnel Assistant (PA) on First Berg. I am thankful to have had this great learning experience. Balancing this role with football and my film classes comes with some challenges, but I have discovered ways to enjoy the busyness of daily life. My favorite part about being a PA is building relationships with the other guys on my floor, and guiding the conversations we have one-on-one and in groups. . The idea of being vulnerable with other men was a foreign idea to me and to most of the guys on First Berg. Breaking this mold is something that I have emphasized in my two years as a PA. There is power in sharing our struggles with one another and in learning what it means for “iron to sharpen iron”. This is something that I have seen the guys become more comfortable with and it has been a blessing.
The Film & Media Arts program has been a key factor in my growth at Taylor. The people in this program are a big family and I am reminded of it every time I walk the halls. The professors continually pour themselves into us and it’s clear that they are doing it out of love and passion. I feel cared for outside of class just as much as I do within the classroom. The faculty sacrifice a lot of their personal time to help us reach a professional level in our work. Other students in the program are another big part of why I love Taylor. We are a very talented group with a variety of skills sets. It has been an amazing experience seeing others express their creativity and passions in different ways. Almost everything we do forces us to work with, rather than against, one another; we are learning to put our best effort in to helping each other succeed.
Thank you to everyone who has been intentionally generous with your talent, time, and finances to give me this opportunity!
